Hybrid Languages Offer Hope for Machine Translation Improvements

Researchers at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain have found that hybrid language forms can be utilized to bridge language gaps for machine translation software. Inspired by “Cityspeak”, a mix of languages featured in the film Blade Runner, scientists Luis Leiva and Vicent Alabau have forged an ‘interlanguage’ system that improves the effectiveness of machine translation tools like Google Translate. The ‘interlanguage’ system acts by creating a hybrid form of English and Spanish, for example, in order to give the software a metaphorical stepping-stone from which it can move more stably between the languages.
